Thekkady is Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary's gateway town — a 141km, 3-hour drive from Madurai through Theni and Cumbum, and one of the more relaxed day trips we run since there's no toll on the route and the roads are generally easy going.

Distance and Route
The drive covers about 141km through Usilampatti, Andipatti, Theni and Cumbum before reaching Thekkady - roughly 3 hours, and genuinely one of our easier routes since there's no toll charge on the way. The last stretch climbs gently into the Western Ghats foothills, nowhere near as demanding as the Ooty or Munnar ghat roads.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The main draw is the boat safari on Periyar Lake, run by the Kerala Forest Department - a slow cruise past the shoreline where elephants, bison and deer often come down to drink. Spice plantation tours are the other common addition, since this region grows a real mix of cardamom, pepper and cinnamon you can walk through.
Wildlife sightings are genuinely better in the hotter months (April-May) when animals gather near the water more predictably - worth knowing if seeing animals matters more to you than comfortable weather.
Best Time to Visit
September to March is the best overall window. December-January brings the best weather but also the biggest crowds, since it overlaps with peak tourist season across Kerala's hill country. If you specifically want wildlife sightings over cooler weather, April-May - hot as it is - genuinely improves your odds, since animals concentrate near the lake.
Getting There Comfortably
Because there's no toll and the road is relatively easy going compared to our other hill routes, Thekkady works well as a genuine single-day round trip without the very early starts that Ooty or Munnar need. Leaving Madurai by 7:00-7:30 AM gives you a comfortable morning arrival, a full afternoon for the boat safari and a plantation visit, and still an easy evening drive back.
Spice Plantation Tours
The spice plantation tours around Thekkady are usually guided walks lasting an hour or two, through working plantations growing cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and cloves - genuinely informative if you want to see how these spices actually grow rather than just buying them packaged. Most plantations also run a small shop at the end, which is a reasonable way to pick up real local spices rather than tourist-market versions.
