The final stretch into Ooty climbs the Coonoor Ghat on NH181 — the most-traveled of the Nilgiri ghat roads, with 14 numbered hairpin bends. It's a real mountain climb, not a gentle drive, so if motion sickness is a concern for anyone travelling with you, it's worth knowing in advance and planning accordingly (seating position, timing of meals, keeping car windows cracked).

The ghat is also more prone to landslides during heavy monsoon rain than the flatter approach roads. If you're travelling June through September, build in some schedule flexibility rather than a tight same-day return — a closure or slow-moving traffic on this stretch can add real time to the trip.

October to February gives the clearest views over the tea gardens and the most comfortable weather for sightseeing once you arrive — this is also when the Nilgiri Mountain Railway run is at its most scenic. June-September brings the monsoon risk on the ghat road described above, so if your dates are flexible, it's worth avoiding that window specifically for the drive, not just the weather at the destination.
